We’ve all probably been there. You go in to a store to compare prices for a product you are interested in getting and you walk out having purchased the latest and greatest veggie slicer with diamond accents for $79.99. And you don’t eat vegetables! The same thing can easily happen when looking at replacing your windows. In today’s blog, I’m going to give you a replacement window tip on how to avoid high pressure sales tactics.

It’s a common practice. Big chains greet you when you enter the store and show you the newest windows on the market and upsell you on the grand features. After a whirlwind tour and lots of information tossed your way, the sales person simply asks, “OK, which ones can I get ordered for you today? We will have them installed within a week.” And you are spinning from all the information you have received. The salesperson has offered you a great deal and you don’t want to miss out on their special that expires tonight. So you order the windows and walk out of the store wondering what just happened. Unfortunately, their tactic has worked. Their hope is that if they can get you to sign a contract immediately, you will never know that you most likely over-paid or are getting a sub quality product for the same price others offer better quality windows at.

When in these high pressure situations, it’s common that prices have been inflated 25 to 50 percent to allow for “BIG discounts” if you make a decision right away. The problem is, these “BIG discounts” are often just bringing the price down to the standard level and you really are not getting a discount at all. Any reputable dealer will give you at least a few days to make a sound decision rather than one based on emotion to get their big deal.

What I recommend is that you get at least 2-3 bids on replacement windows and patio doors. There are multiple companies offering great products and you owe it to yourself to see what is on the market before making a big purchase. Depending on the number of windows in your home, replacing windows can be a multi-thousand dollar investment and you want to know you are getting the best window at the best price.

These bids can be from the same manufacturer or from multiple manufacturers. The key is to get quotes for different product lines, various materials and different styles. Take in to consideration what will look best in your home, but also what is going to give you the best efficiency in keeping your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. By looking at the options, you are going to be an informed consumer and will feel confident that you made the best decision possible. Don’t get caught up in high pressure sales tactics. Just thank them for their information and turn around and leave. Find another company that supports your need for information and one that is willing to spend time with you to discuss the options available to you. If I were a chef, I most likely wouldn’t get my knives from the freebie demonstration table at my local market. I would rely on industry reviews, recommendations and information from sources in the know. The same goes when replacing your windows and patio doors. Trust those that do this for a living, not just an occasional add on to paint, potting soil and lawn mowers.
